Alan Trotter

Finance Director, Alliance Trust

Alan joined Alliance Trust as FD in 2010 and is responsible for Finance, Risk and Compliance.  Previously he was Group Corporate Development Director at Legal & General Group PLC, where he was also responsible for the UK Central Finance function.  He qualified as a Chartered Accountant with Ernst & Young where he specialised in financial services, working both in the UK and internationally.  Alan is a member of the Financial Reporting Review Panel and the Audit Committee of the University of Edinburgh.

Anders Rasmussen

Partner, McKinsey & Company

Anders is a leader of McKinsey’s European corporate finance practice, and has served clients in the oil and gas sector, and other industrial companies. His areas of specialism include the role and agenda of the CFO, performance management and business planning. He has written for McKinsey on Finance on topics such as ‘When should CFOs take the helm’. Before joining McKinsey in 2000 he was with Den Danske Bank. He has degrees from Aarhus School of Business, Denmark, and the University of Illinois, USA.

Andrew Lewis

Group FD, Avon Rubber

Andrew joined the listed manufacturer, Avon Rubber in 2008 – right after the Lehman Bros collapse – and began the turnaround of a business that was clearly in trouble. That hugely successful project was a key reason he won Young FD of the Year at the FDs’ Excellence Awards 2011, in association with ICAEW.

Arif Kamal

Group FD, GL Hearn

Arif joined GL Hearn, a firm of Property Consultants, in 1997 as Group financial controller. He was promoted to the role of Group Finance Director in 2003, joining the Main Board of GL Hearn.  He was instrumental in the incorporation of the Group from a partnership in 1999.  Arif is also a Non-Executive Director for the NHS Harrow & Brent (Primary Care Trust) and chairs their Remuneration Committee.

Bridget Rosewell

Partner, Volterra Consulting

Bridget combines business and policy responsibilities with changing and improving the way in which economic analysis is done and how risks are measured and managed. She is also Chief Economic Adviser to the GLA and to the Mayor of London and has given expert evidence at Planning Inquiries and other tribunals. Bridget is also a Non-Executive Director of Network Rail and sits on a variety of other bodies, including the With-Profits Committee for the Co-operative Bank.

Freelance writer and editor

Richard spent eight years producing magazines for and about FDs, first as editor of Financial Director, then of Real Finance. Since 2006 he’s been a freelance writer and editor, working with organisations such as Microsoft, the ICAEW, the Market Research Society, the CBI, EquityFD, PwC, the Mayor of London, Advent International, Gemalto and the European Patent Office – as well as writing for a clutch of business and accountancy magazines and web sites, including Real Deals, CFO World, Research, Accountancy and Recruitment Matters. Richard also runs courses on Better Business Writing and has chaired a number of conferences and web videos.

David Thomson

CEO, Close Invoice Finance

David Thomson is Chief Executive Officer of leading UK independent invoice finance provider, Close Invoice Finance and a Director of the Close Brothers Commercial Division.

Currently leading a move to integrate Close’s Invoice and Asset finance offerings, David plays a key role in the development of the Groups broader banking ambitions.

Douglas Ure

UK Leader of Enterprise Risk Services, Marsh Risk Consulting

Douglas is responsible for developing and delivering a wide range of risk management services, with a focus on strategic and enterprise risk management. He specialises in corporate governance, enterprise risk management, supply chain risk, project risk and the design and delivery of risk training for clients. Douglas advises clients both nationally and internationally across numerous industry sectors.

Eddie McLaughlin

MD & Practice Leader, Marsh Risk Consulting

Eddie started his career with an International Management Consulting company (McKinsey) and a premier actuarial consulting firm (Watson Wyatt) – where he gained his professional qualifications and affiliations. – The Institute of Actuaries, Institute of Risk Management and Chartered Insurance Institute. In addition, he has two academic awards in the field of risk management (Risk Financing and Corporate Risk Management).

CEO, Balfour Beatty plc

Ian Tyler is a graduate of Birmingham University and a chartered accountant, qualifying with Arthur Andersen in London. He joined Balfour Beatty in 1996 as Finance Director, was appointed Chief Operating Officer in August 2002 and became Chief Executive in January 2005. Prior to this he was FD of ARC Limited, and FC at Hanson’s Group. He has also held the positions of Group Treasurer and Financial Controller at Storehouse Plc. He is a Non-Executive Director of Cable and Wireless Communications Plc and is President of CRASH, the construction and property industry charity for homeless people around the UK.

James Cheesewright

CFO and a main Board Director, Eurostar

James joined Eurostar in August 2010, and a key achievement has been to secure €550 million financing for new high speed trains. He was previously Group Vice President, at Misys and spent 12 years at Cable & Wireless PLC, in both senior general management and finance roles, including six years overseas.

Jim Buckle

COO, LoveFilm

Jim joined LoveFilm, the video rental and streaming company as CFO in 2006, which became part of Amazon.com in 2011. Jim has held a range of senior finance and management roles, primarily in media and technology, with the BBC, Dell and, more recently, in venture-backed, start-up and fast-growth businesses.

Matthew Eatough

CEO, Proxima

Matthew Eatough is founder and CEO of Proxima (formerly buyingTeam), Europe’s leading provider of end-to-end procurement services. Matthew channelled the dotcom era’s enthusiasm for new technology and led the business into developing software packages. He raised significant external investment to allow his team to create a pioneering IT platform, which enabled customers to purchase business services online from a wider range of suppliers. The platform was a huge success, and in 2002 it was sold to an online utility manager, which later became uSwitch.com.

Narin Ganesh

Regional FD, Crown Worldwide Group

Narin Ganesh is Regional FD for Crown Worldwide Group, responsible for a growing combined business turning over in excess of £70m in the UK, Ireland & Scandinavia. His chief claim to fame was going undercover for the Channel 4 TV programme Undercover Boss, although he has decided that being an FD holds fewer terrors than appearing in front of a camera. With 14 years post-qualification experience Narin has worked in a diverse range of organisations, large and small, in the voluntary and private sectors.

Philip Pirie

FTEN Mentor and Executive Coach

Philip is an independent executive coach who started life as an ICAEW Chartered Accountant and moved into international banking.  He retrained by taking an MSc in Organisational Psychology at Birkbeck College, and has been working with individuals, teams and groups as an executive coach and facilitator for over ten years.  His practice covers numerous business sectors from board level downwards, and he has recently completed a diploma in team coaching.

Robert Griffiths

Leadership Coach

Robert started his career in business as a Chartered Accountant but soon realised he was really passionate about understanding how people learn in life and why they fail to learn.  He trained as a coach and facilitator using the sporting Inner Game principles of Tim Gallwey and for the past 20 years has worked as a coach, trainer and facilitator.  His client base ranges from middle managers to board members of Plcs.

Simon Speirs

Finance Solutions Architect, Sutherland Global Services

Simon leads the design and implementation of Finance and other back-office solutions focussing on the SME market place, but also supporting where required larger, global operations. His focus is on ensuring joined up thinking across people, process and technology to ensure speedy achievement and maximised long-term value from his clients’ back-office organisations.

Simon started his career in helping set-up and successfully run a small local business. He then went on to support the turnaround of a larger organisation of £20m turnover by consolidating a number of disparate businesses, having been acquired, then left to fend for themselves. Simon subsequently worked within a number of smaller outsourcing business units within blue-chip companies such as ABB, Accenture, PwC and Hewlett Packard.

Simon Whale

MD, Luther Pendragon

Simon has 20 years’ experience in communications consultancy, advising clients across the business world and in the public and voluntary sectors. His work has a strong issues focus and he has particular expertise in drawing together a range of communications disciplines – media relations, public affairs, stakeholder relations – to manage those issues and deliver effective results for clients. He joined Luther Pendragon in 2000 as managing partner. He was previously a director of Bell Pottinger Public Affairs where in addition to his client-facing role he had responsibility for integrating a significant acquisition into the group.

Siva Shankar

FD, Segro plc

Siva was most recently corporate finance director at real estate giant SEGRO plc (formerly Slough Estates) with responsibility for strategic planning and M&A for a £5.5bn real estate portfolio. For 18 months during the financial crisis, he also oversaw investor relations and group performance management.

MD, Change Driver

In March 2000, Smo set up as an independent turnaround and change management specialist. He has considerable experience of tackling the main business challenges encountered by larger businesses both public and private. He works as a strategy consultant for profitable businesses as well as an accredited (STP/IFT full member) turnaround professional for troubled businesses. He has also worked with several Chief Executives as a mentor/coach.

Trevor Williams

Chief Economist, Lloyds Bank Corporate Markets

Trevor is Chief Economist at Lloyds Bank Corporate Markets. The economics team supports the Bank’s trading and sales activities. He regularly writes articles for publications and appears in the financial press and on television. Trevor is a member of the Institute for Economic Affairs Shadow Monetary Policy Committee, made up of leading independent monetary economists. Trevor joined Lloyds Banking Group from the UK Civil Service where he worked as an economist, while studying for a PhD. He has both a BA (Hons) and a Masters degree in Economics.
